When I'm not delving into historical research, I'm planning a character's demise.

Fair Weather Friends

I thought I would share a humorous poem I wrote a number of years ago in honor of a friend of mine who was there for me a long time ago during a tough time of my life. I always felt I never did enough in return. Oh, and in honor of  Dr. Seuss too. An odd combination, I know, but the fast pace sing song aspect of his rhymes seemed to fit the hysteria.

FAIR WEATHER FRIENDS

by Cindy Amrhein

Rrrrrrring—Rrrrrriinnnngggg
Maureen? Maureen! Are you busy?
Can you do a favor for me?
I am stuck inside this phone booth,
and outside—the rain−it’s pouring!
I know.  I know.  But the car won’t start.
It’s getting late.  It’s getting dark.
Jeez Maureen, you’re my best friend!
Ah huh—OK—not this late again.

Rrrrrriiinnnggg—Rrrrrrring
Maureen? Maureen!  Are you busy?
Can you do a favor for me?
I missed the bus.  I need a ride,
and the terminals closing up inside.
I know.  I know.  But my watch is slow.
There’s no place else around to go!
Forty minutes?  OK, that’s fine.
No, I’ll wait right here.  I’ll watch the time.

Rrrrriinngggg—Rrrrrrring
Maureen?  Maureen! Are you busy?
Can you do a favor for me?
No. No. No—I don’t need a ride.
I got a car, but the key’s locked inside!
You’re right, that’s a stupid thing to do.
No, I can’t pop the lock.  The car is new.
Just get my other set from home.
I promise—yes—then I’ll leave you alone.

Rrrrrrring—Rrrrrrriiinngggg—Rrrrrrring!
Hello? Oh, hi Maureen.  What’s new?
You’re stuck where?  You were with who?
Gee, that’s too bad.  Sounds like a creep.
And you had to pay?  Man—that’s cheap.
Oh, I see—so all your moneys gone,
and now you have no way back home?
Well, I’m sure someone there will give you a ride.
Good luck, and hey—let’s do lunch some time.
